National Tree Day

We’re gearing up for another month of environmental awareness here at MyLife, and what better way to start August than with National Tree Day? It’s a chance to play a part in repopulating our country with plant life and raising awareness for nature protection.

National Tree Day was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Art and Olivia Newton-John. What began as small community events has now grown into an impressive Australian environmental initiative, with a goal to plant over one million new trees shrubs and grasses each year. Since 1996, over 26 million trees have been planted by more than 5 million people – and these numbers continue to grow with the help of dedicated volunteers all around Australia.

This year on August 1, communities are encouraged to come together to support National Tree Day, while school children will have the opportunity to get involved on Friday 30th July. Getting involved is a great way to connect with your community and nature and to foster the importance of education and environmental care to the next generation.

National Tree Day have suggested several ways to join in on the action and get your hands dirty!

1. Host a Picnic (subject to COVID Rules) in addition to a planting event

2. Collaborate with local garden suppliers and get them involved with the action, perhaps try and arrange a sponsorship opportunity

3. Include kids in your event with a treasure or scavenger hunt

4. Involve your local council and arrange a representative to speak to your planting crew about how best to care for the local environment

5. Get involved with School Tree Day and volunteer your time to the local primary school. Perhaps you can assist with providing plants/tools and/or labour?

6. Add a composting element to your Tree Day. Host a composting awareness session and have your planting party guess which objects can and can’t be composted! HINT: we have a handy guide!

Get your team together to support National Tree Day today! It’s never too late to make a positive impact!
